How we can help

At Fusion Safety, we assist organisations through Ocular.

Ocular is a holistic approach for developing high performing safety cultures.

HERO CODE PROJECT

At the core of the Hero Code Project is the understanding that, if we are to achieve such high levels of workplace safety maturity, leadership is needed
at all levels of the organisation. This is an important point in understanding the power and uniqueness of the Hero Code Project.

The Hero Code Project is, in essence, an interconnected set of practical
safety leadership development initiatives that produce a common, organisation-wide safety leadership language, skills and practices.
Everyone is expected to develop the Hero Code knowledge, skills and attitudes required to contribute to safety leadership.

The Hero Code Project will produce leaders who are constantly informed about workplace challenges, have a continuous flow of information, and
who employ a common Hero Code language and skills. Everyone will feel confident and safe to speak up and discuss issues that may cause harm
at any time.

Shawal Mohamed, GradIOSH
Director
Asia Hub, Singapore.

What does he do?

Shawal is a Health, Safety and Environment professional with 22 years of experience. He has an Environmental & Occupational Health Safety Degree in addition to his Diploma in Mechanical Engineering specialising in Aerospace Materials. He is also a Graduate Professional Member with the Institution of Occupational Safety and Health in the United Kingdom.

After completing a stint in Singapore’s police force, Shawal joined the Ministry of Manpower’s Occupational Safety and Health Division in 2002, firstly as a Factory Inspector and moving on to become a Workplace Safety and Health Investigation Officer. During that near-decade service in the Ministry. Shawal had served in the Shipyard and Construction branches and served in the investigation team for the Panel of Inquiry of the ‘Almudaina’ vessel fire in Keppel Shipyard, supporting the Commission of Inquiry of the Nicoll Highway accident and also supported the Ministry’s push toward a risk management structure by working closely with HSE UK both in Singapore and in the United Kingdom as part of the WSH reform in 2004.

While Shawal had been building capabilities in scaffolding works, confined space and noise monitoring, he had also embarked on expanding his HSE repertoire by being a tutor for the NEBOSH IGC course program and also the IOSH Managing Safely course. His passion for lifelong learning in HSE had also culminated in being trained by Culture Change International as a safety culture consultant and during his current tenure at Fusion Safety, had resulted in him being trained to facilitate Fusion Safety’s niche safety leadership program, the Hero Code. His passion for learning and collaboration forms part of his philosophy that safety can only be effective if we keep ourselves relevant and well-acquainted with peers and stakeholders.

But who is he really?

Shawal loves music and the entertainment industry where he loves to emcee and croon in a rocking way with his band. Nowadays, he is polishing his vocal prowess via the Karaoke route and so far, has not incurred any noise complaints during his ‘performances’. He is also a closet Star Wars fan, he doesn’t run around in a Jedi cape to show it but he keeps a collection of Star Wars toys and collectables as part of his collection ( he did admit that on occasions, he allows his inner child to play with them as toys).

Shawal had always loved travelling and meeting new people and likes to explore on foot during his travels. His bedrock had and always been his family where his wife, Noor, and his 3 kids, princesses – Batrisyia and Fathaniah and his prince Matin, keep fit by cycling.

One thing you may not know about Shawal

Shawal met his wife while they were both in the Singapore Police Force. While they were at loggerheads when they were on duty back then, they have now been happily ‘arrested’ in marriage for the past 16 years.

Erminda loves knitting, baking, cooking, travelling, and bonding with her family, friends and loved ones. She is also fond of watching and researching different alternative living especially tiny houses. She has a dream to own a small resort and Air BnB in a small tiny community.

One thing you may not know about Erminda
Erminda had a horrifying, nearly Titanic experience when she was the only one on duty as a graveyard shift Purser and gave the Captain, Chief Engineer, Chief Officer, Hotel Manager and Chief Purser an emergency wake-up call and announced for the very first time over the PA, “This is NOT a Drill”.

Maverick Cai
Industrial Hygienist
Asia Hub, Singapore

What does he do?
Maverick is an Industrial Hygienist supporting IH projects in Singapore to establish compliance with Workplace Safety & Health (General Provision) Regulations, First Schedule.

He has a B.Sc in Human Factors in Safety and is also a registered Workplace Safety & Health Officer with the Ministry of Manpower (Singapore), a Certified Personal Trainer and a Rehab Trainer.

Originally a Workplace Safety & Health professional in the semiconductor industry, Maverick dived headfirst into Personal Training in his early 30s after noticing a significant struggle in tackling musculoskeletal disorders and injuries among working adults.

From personal experiences, he knew how biomechanics and psychology can be managed in supporting ageing and extending a person’s career. His coaching has helped multiple clients regain functionality from Work-Related Musculoskeletal Disorders such as frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, and lower back pain.

Now Maverick is back with hopes to extend further into science in ergonomics through Industrial Hygiene.

But who is he really?
Maverick enjoys martial arts, loves animals, and most recently, volunteers in serving his Grassroots Community due to the depressing effects of the pandemic.

He has fought in a handful of Muaythai events, miraculously adopted a 17kg stray dog in 2016, and is regularly reaching out to neighbourhood residents to check if anybody requires further help. He aspires to pass on his striking skills to younger generations and establish his own animal sanctuary in the near future.

One thing you may not know about Maverick
His journey in overcoming cynophobia and uncanny ability to take great care of Bagel as his own son, gave him the encouragement to welcome his daughter on 23 August 2018. He realises fear is false evidence appearing real, and there are more latent capabilities within him than meets the eye

Craig Docherty
CEO/Founder
Base Camp, Mt Beauty, Australia.

What does he do?

Craig is an Occupational Health and Safety professional with 30 years of experience. He has a Science Degree with a major in Occupational Health and Safety and is a Charted Professional Member of the Safety Institute of Australia.

After qualifying, Craig held a variety of Supervision and Management positions in Australia, but then moved to Singapore in 1998, where he commenced work as the Project Safety, Health and Environment Manager for Merck, Sharp and Dohme’s Singapore Chemical production facility. Building on the success of that project, Craig moved to the US in 2000, taking up the position of Global Construction Safety Manager. He was tasked to develop and implement a consistent high-level approach to safety across Merck Projects worldwide and did so until 2005.

In 2005, Craig was requested by the Singaporean government (Ministry of Manpower) to assist with the implementation of the Occupational Health and Safety Act 2006. Craig was appointed as the Director OSH Inspectorate and later, gazetted Deputy Commissioner under the Workplace Health and Safety Act. During this period, Craig, with his team, was involved in the investigation of over 130 fatalities which changed his life.

Throughout his career, Craig had noticed that there was an over-reliance on systems as the solution to preventing injuries and fatalities. He knew from experience that a focus on leadership and organisational culture is as important as having a good system. He now uses diversity and leadership at all levels as the basis of his consulting work.

In 2007, Craig set up Fusion Safety Management, applying this methodology to a few firms in Asia and Australia, gradually building the business reach organically. He continued to grow the business organically, employing other like-minded professionals with the goal of improving people’s lives.

But who is he really?

Craig loves spending time on two wheels. He has several motorbikes, both on-road and off-road, and enjoys mountain biking as well. He also loves being in the air. He started gliding at school, progressing to hang gliders and finally to general aviation. He currently flies an RV6. Craig plays the guitar better than Ross anyway but finds solace in the Clawhammer Banjo (Believe it or not). He is married to Lee and has 3 kids, two daughters, Kai and Makayla and one son Tom, who are all still at school.

One thing you may not know about Craig

Craig flew a small aircraft to JFK international airport to pick up his mother when she was visiting him in the USA.
